Ruth Kebede Tessema, M.D.

Ruth Tessema, M.D., is an ophthalmologist at the Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins Medicine Howard County and Frederick locations. She earned her medical degree from Howard University and completed her ophthalmology residency at the UC Davis Eye Center. Before joining the Wilmer Eye Institute, she worked as an ophthalmologist with Kaiser Permanente in California. A lifelong interest in science and a passion for helping people live healthy, full lives led Dr. Tessema into medicine and the field of ophthalmology. She approaches care with the recognition that eyesight is vital to patient well-being and independence, and she strives to be a patient advocate, to remove systemic barriers to quality care and to protect the health and dignity of everyone she works with. Dr. Tessema has clinical experience in cataract surgery, glaucoma management, diabetic eye disease, dry eye treatment, and eyelid and ocular surface disorders.

Absolutely Wonderful. The Young Lady at the check in window was great. The ladies in the back a long with the Doctors were Wonderful. Went in for stitches removal and felt so comfortable. The entire staff were professional. See you again soon BWH 🙂

Where do I begin? I am absolutely SO thankful for the entire team here! My husband had surgery on his wrist yesterday and of course I was nervous because lets be honest, not all doctors are good doctors. My husband spoke so highly of Dr. Horton leading up the the surgery saying "I know I am going to be fine, I trust my doctor". When we arrived that morning the team coming in was very pleasant not only how they spoke to us, but how they spoke to each other. I work in the dental field, and I know what having a strong team looks like. THEY are THAT! The assistant came out to let me know they were running behind but everything was moving along and took a second to connect with me and make sure I was comfortable. Dr. Horton brought me back to speak once the surgery was finished and he was as great as my husband explained. He was very laid back, personable and knowledgeable. He took time to explain things in a way I would understand exactly what he had done, and I can help with the recovery process. Once I was able to go back with my husband the nurse was able to also break everything down and help me get my husband home. I cannot thank you all enough for the compassion and understanding. To some people its just a job, but I can tell each one of them truly care and that does not go unnoticed!
